The change in visa requirements was delivered this week by the National Executive Council and is the first time this option has been available to Australian visitors.
Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority’s chief executive officer Jerry Agus said in a statement yesterday that he is delighted at the news and sees this decision as an important step forward for the PNG tourism industry.
"We wholeheartedly welcome this news and believe that by simplifying the process and allowing visas to be granted upon arrival at no cost, will entice more Australians to visit one of their closest neighbours," Mr Agus said.
He said that during the past few years the PNGTPA had seen rapid growth in cruise ship arrivals and now with an easier visa process "we hope to see increased numbers for those arriving by plane too".
"We now want to work with all the partners to ensure a streamlined process through the airport immigration system.
"We want to thank Department of Treasury, PNG Immigration and Citizenship Services Authority and all other Government agencies who have supported us to make this happen.
"The Government is now not talking about the potential of tourism but backing it up with milestone decisions like this and the recent one relating to Port Moresby-Beijing flight and 30 days visa upon arrival for Chinese tourists.
"Tourism is the industry we must now develop as the buffer to petroleum and mining sector," Mr Agus said.
