School girl arrested over Social Media post
Provincial police commander Supt Jim Namora said yesterday that the girl (name withheld) was identified after police saw a post she allegedly made on Facebook.
She had posted and alleged that police were biased when handling a recent situation in Kimbe which had resulted in people from East Sepik burning down properties owned by people from Enga.
Sources who saw and read the post on Facebook alerted police.
“Acting on that information, police accessed her Facebook account and were shocked when they saw the post,” Namora said.
He said the post was defamatory and included insulting terms.
Namora said the student was located at her home at Section 21 and taken to Kimbe police station for questioning.
She has been charged under the Telecommunications Act and the Summary Offences Act.
She was released on a K500 bail on Tuesday and will appear in court tomorrow.
Namora said police in Kimbe were now warning social media users in the province not to make false or unsubstantiated comments in relation to the incident between the Sepiks and the Engans as such comments would only provoke the current situation.
