1,077 cases of child abuse in Fiji reported last year
Fijian Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa highlighted in parliament today that last year one thousand and seventy-seven cases of child abuse were reported for 2016.
“In 2012 there were three hundred and thirteen reported cases and in 2016 its one thousand and seventy-seven reported cases and out of this there’s one thousand two hundred and ninety-three cases of sexual abuse followed by neglect which is eight hundred and ninety-seven and physical abuse at five hundred and fifty-two and if we need to make an effort not only from government but with community-based organisations and also parental responsibility.”
Vuniwaqa says their statistics revealed that most of the victims were sexually abused by close family members or relatives
