New hotel marks milestone in development of Tonga’s tourism sector
Tonga’s Prime Minister Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva says the role of Government is to create an appropriate environment to facilitate economic growth.
“Our role in government is to create appropriate supporting domestic policy environment to facilitate economic growth. As a matter of fact we need a strong and solid foundation on which to build our economy,” he said.
“The Dateline Hotel was in a poor condition, at the time it needed an upgrade…we do negotiations with foreign investors, successful negotiation conducted by the Ministry of Lands and National Planning with Tano’a Hotel Groups with an agreement in March 2015.”
PM Pohiva told guests at the official opening of the Tanoa International Dateline Hotel Thursday, that the aim of the project was closely link with the country’s economic development stated in the Tonga Strategic Development Framework.
“Project’s aim is on direct corresponds contributing to our economic development as stated in the Tonga Strategic Development Framework, the government continues to seek to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth through the promotional of economic growth and for further strengthening of business in Tonga.”
He stated that the opening of Tanoa International marked a milestone in the development of Tonga’s tourism sector.
“Tanoa provides availability of international standards, accommodation, and conferences in Tonga and we are looking forward to attract more tourists to our shores, including the upcoming Pacific Games in 2019 and above all contributing to the growth of our economic.”
He also extends his sincere gratitude to Tanoa Group for investing in Tonga.
Reddy Group Managing Director Rohit Reddy said they finalized the deal with Tongan Government in 2015.
“Our journey began some four years ago when it reaches our interests in this hotel with lots of negotiation we finally concluded a deal with the Government of Tonga in March 2015. This project has been an extremely difficult project for us which requires lots of patient,” he said.
Located on the waterfront, the 4.5 star Hotel was filled with guests from abroad, CEOs from the Tongan Government, friends and families celebrating of the official opening.
Her Royal Highness Princess Salote Mafile’o Pilolevu Tuita and Lord Tuita, Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala, Princess Sinatakala Tuku’aho, Hon Lupepau’u Tuita Taione, HSH Kalaniuvalu- Fotofili and Princess Marcella Kalaniuvalu Fotofili, Chairman of Tanoa Hotels Group Mr. Y P Reddy and his family, Deputy Prime Minister of Tonga and Members of Parliament were also present in the ceremony.
The renovation and refurbishment started in 2015 and was completed in January this year.
