PNG Rugby Sevens Teams qualify for the HSBC Rugby Sevens Series
The PNG Rugby Sevens Team Pukpuks and Palais have qualified as the 16th Team for the HSBC Rugby Sevens Series.
With this, the team will be playing with some of the “big guns” in the sporting code.
The team will start their travelling on January 26th-28th in Sydney and February 3rd-4th for the HSBC World Series.
Coach, Douglas Guise has announced that the team will also be participating in a number of tournaments in 2018 as well, and thus 2018 will be a hectic year for the team and its management.
Apart from the HSBC World Series, the team is also competing in the Sevens Rugby World Cup in San Francisco, USA from 20th – 22nd July and also for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Sydney and the Oceania Qualifiers in Fiji.
Selections have already been done for both male and female teams, as the train on squad and have already begun with training during this festive period.
22 females and 20 males have been selected for the train on squad.
Mr Guise says that the selection was done based on the 2016 and 2017 games, because not many games were conducted for the selection committee to base selections on.
However due to funding issues, the team will have to prioritize and cut the team to a final list before the team starts travelling.
Mr Guise has called on Stakeholders, especially the Government and other Corporate Bodies to help fund the preparations and other expenses such as travel and accommodation for the team.
The team has not received any funding from other stakeholders in the past years, however hopes that all can be left in past moving forward into the New Year.
