PNG Digicel Cup: Rabaul Gurias focus on Discipline
Doing the little things and getting it right is the focus in 2018 for Agmark Rabaul Gurias to improve on especially discipline on and off field after back to back loses in the Digicel Cup Grand final in 2016 and 2017.
New captain Edward Goma raised said the team has gone through intensive training for the 2018 season and will no doubt be vying for a spot in the finals this year.
Goma said having a heavy forward pack was something the Gurias lacked last year and for the Digicel Cup 2018 season they have recruited several players from Hunters and other clubs to boost the team’s forward pack.
Goma admitted that the team had light forwards and needed heavy forwards to boost their defence during attack by opposing teams.
Meanwhile, defending premiers and rival’s Lae Snax Tigers who claimed back-to-back premiership’s in 2016-2017 season are up to maintain the cup in this season.
Captain Kambi Paul said the onus is on them to maintain their form for this season.
He said it will be a challenging season, as the comp will be tough as teams look to end their reign.
“Losing star halfback and former captain Charlie Simon and several players to the Hunters has been a blow for us for the 2018 season and we look to work on our halves combination”
“Taking responsibility from Simon as captain I will work hard with coach Stanley Tepend and the team to mend this gap in the engine room of the team to see the game proceed without hiccups” said Paul.
With the inclusion of two new teams into the competition with the likes of Simbu Warriors and Gulf Issous, the 2018 season will be a tough one as ten (10) teams vie for the top spot.
The message behind the 2018 Digicel Cup Competition is based on “No Violence” as teams taking part will make it their responsibility to ensure no violence is tolerated this year.
2018 Digicel Cup franchises taking part are as follows:
-Lae Snax Tigers
