The APEC Food Security Cooperation Forum (APEC FSCF) is working towards establishing a Food Safety Modernization Framework that looks at delivering safer food to consumers, both domestic and internationally imported food.

Concerns over food safety in the Asia Pacific region have risen and spurred a high level collective mandate from APEC Leaders to improve safety standards and practices.

In 2007 after the formation of the APEC FSCF, a robust approach was sought to strengthening food safety standards using scientific risk-based approaches and without creating unnecessary impediments to trade.

The framework progresses the agreed goals of the FSCF thus is expected to provide guidance to APEC economies on enhancing or modernizing their food safety regulatory systems to ensure safe food for consumers and to facilitate trade.

The FSCF delegates during this Second Expert Meeting will further discuss challenges that may affect food safety from farm to table and is applicable to all foods available for sale in the domestic market of APEC economies whether it is produced domestically or imported.

While the primary focus of the framework is on food safety, it is recognized that national food safety regulatory systems will also need to protect the consumers from misrepresentation and fraud.
