PNG Health Authorities to probe Disease outbreak at Goroka Hospital
Papua New Guinea Health authorities are investigating the disease outbreak which claimed at least 35 lives in Goroka, says Health and HIV-Aids Minister Elias Kapavore, pictured.
“I have directed both the World Health Organisation and technical experts from the Health Department to immediately visit the site and carry out an investigation into what is occurring at the hospital,” he said.
“This investigation will include an analysis on the cause of the deaths.
“The team will be flying to Goroka on Thursday (today) and will provide an analysis upon their return.
“I will issue another press release providing an update on this issue once the analysis is in shortly.”
He said the National Emergency Operations Centre which dealt with such cases was yet to receive a report from the hospital too.
“I note that the media reports have linked these deaths to Klebsiella, a rare disease often caused by poor infection control,” he said.
“It is important to note that the National Emergency Operations Centre that oversees and manages such incidents has not received any formal report from the provincial hospital or the health authority regarding this issue. Notwithstanding this, it is important that we investigate.”
