Port Moresby Unity Independence Walk Draws Thousands

The streets of Port Moresby were a sea of red, black and gold as hundreds of city residents with their PNG flags held high marched from the Jack Pidik Park at Five-Mile down to Ela Beach, as early as 6 am this morning.

The Unity walk is part of 'Amazing Port Moresby's Independence festival' organized by the National Capital District Commission which culminates in the big day tomorrow - Monday 16th September.

NCD Governor Powes Parkop who led the walk, when addressing the people at Ela Beach, called on everyone in NCD to respect and be proud of Papua New Guinea no matter what little province they come from.

He says PNG has come a long way as a nation, and as a people and that it is important for everyone to see themselves as 'one.'

The NCD Governor says the challenge now is to be better now and into the future.

The theme for the festival is 'One City, one people and one Nation.'

The Unity walk which kick started today's program will end with an 'Anslom concert' tonight at 7 pm, at Ela Beach.
