Australia, New Zealand lead Regional Police Support team for Bougainville Referendum
Participants of the Bougainville Referendum Regional Police Support Mission landed in Buka today.
New Zealand is leading the unarmed police mission at the request of the Government of Papua New Guinea and the Autonomous Bougainville Government.
The members are from Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Solomon islands and Vanuatu, countries that witnessed the Bougainville Peace Agreement signing in Arawa in 2001.
The Regional Police Support Mission is providing support to the Bougainville Police service over the referendum period and will be based in three locations, BUKA, ARAWA and BUIN.
Mission leader, INSPECTOR STEVE KOSE said that New Zealand has a long standing relationship with the Bougainville Police Service and is pleased to lead this mission.
New Zealand High Commissioner, PHILIP TAULA flew into Buka on the New Zealand Defence Force Plane carrying the mission personnel.
The Hercules C-130 also delivered equipment for the mission and for the New Zealand Police’s long standing Bougainville Community Policing programme.
New Zealand is pleased to support the Government of Papua New Guinea and the Autonomous Bougainville Government to enable a peaceful and credible referendum process.
