Great Britain Lions to arrive in PNG on Tuesday
A huge crowd is expected at the Jacksons Airport to welcome the Great Britain Lions when they arrive in Port Moresby at 12.20pm tomorrow (Tuesday November 12, 2019) ahead of the clash against the PNG LNG Kumuls this Saturday (November 16, 2019) at the Oil Search National Football Stadium.
The Lions are coached by Wayne Bennet and captained former Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and current St. George Illawarra Dragons forward James Graham.
Players arriving tomorrow include Gareth Widdop (St George Illawarra Dragons), Tom Burgess (South Sydney Rabbitohs), Canberra Raiders trio Josh Hodgson, John Bateman and Elliot Whitehead,and former Raiders Blake Austin and former NQ Cowboys , Lachlan Coote now playing in the Super League in England.
PNGRFL CEO Reatau Rau said the Great Britain Lions are touring PNG after 23 years.
“Great Britain were the first International team to play PNG Kumuls in 1975 in Port Moresby after PNGRFL became a full member of International Rugby League in 1974,” Rau said.
He said both countries have met on nine occasions - seven in PNG with the last in Port Moresby in 1992 and Lae in 1996 – with Great Britain winning eight.
“PNG Kumul’s only win against Great Britain was in the first of two Test series in 1990 in Goroka,” Rau added.
Rau said tickets for this game are on sale now at the Tiketmastas outlets at Brian Bell Boroko and Vision City, Homecentre at Gordons, Cool Stuff at Waterfront and J Mart at Erima.
Ticket prices are: Grandstand – K120, West Wing – K60, East Stand – K45, South / North Stands – K35.
Rau said the first game will be the Women’s 2nd Test Match between the Oil Search PNG Orchids and England WRL set to to kick off at 3.00pm followed by the PNG LNG Kumuls versus Great Britain Lions at 5.30pm.
“Get your tickets early for this International double header this Saturday November 16, 2019,” Rau said.
