Motion of No-Confidence on 18 November against Solomon Islands PM Sogavare invalid says Clerk to Parliament
Any attempts by the Opposition Group to move a motion of no confidence against Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare on Monday, 18 November will not happen after they failed to submit a notice to Parliament on Sunday.
Clerk to Parliament, David Kusilifu said under the Standing Order, you have to meet the seven clear days’ notice.
However, Kusilifu said it does not stop the Opposition from submitting the motion during the proceeding of the Parliament.
According to SBM, the Opposition bench last Thursday declared that it is seriously thinking of tabling a o confidence motion against Sogavare, when Parliament next resume next Monday.
Deputy Leader of Opposition Peter Kenilorea Jnr told journalists: “Yes the Opposition is seriously thinking about the motion and the timing of the motion is the big issue.”
Kenilorea Jnr was speaking following a reconciliation he had with the MP for West Are’are and former deputy Prime Minister John Maneniaru to end election campaign differences.
The MP for Small Malaita Rick Houenipwela witnessed the ceremony.
Maneniaru and Houenipwela were sacked by Prime Minister Sogavare for refusing to vote for China. Both MPs abstained and were sacked weeks after Solomon Islands voted to oust Taiwan for China.
Maneniaru and Houenipwela have declared that they are now with the Opposition bench.
Kenilorea Jnr said in terms of confidence in the government, there is no confidence and that is why the idea of moving a motion of no confidence is very strong within the Opposition group— it’s just a matter of timing.
“It is no surprise — we in the Opposition are just representing our people and their voices. There is no confidence in the government and the current leadership,” he adds.
On the question of MNC, former PM Houenipwela said it is absolutely necessary.
“We have an alternate government – and this is a serious matter as the public knows the government is actually not governing. We are not progressing anywhere at all.
“On the vote of no confidence, yes, the group is seriously considering that,” he said in support of Kenilorea Jnr.
On leadership, the three southern region MPs said they are prepared to support any leader who is elected to lead the country.
He said the reconciliation confirms their position to support whoever is the leader.
