PNG Govt aims to reach K200 billion in GDP : Basil
The PNG government aims to reach K200 billion in GDP says National Planning Minister Sam Basil.
Mr Basil was representing the Prime Minister James Marape at the PNG Australia Alumni Association (PNGAAA) annual dinner last Saturday in Port Moresby.
Mr Basil said this goal will only happen when it invests in the right places and through effective partnerships with institutions such as the PNGAAA.
He said this is because in the last 10 years the government has grew the economy from K30bn to K84bn, this saw the increase of per capita income from K500 per head to K2600 per head.
“We also improve the human development index rate with literacy and life expectancy.
Help us reduce population growth, find ways to double agricultural production so that per capita income can be improved for our people, help us reduce crime and improve societal living our country is set to grow further in the next 10 years.
“We aim to grow the GDP of K200bn by 2029.
This government is open to ideas and we look forward to your submissions as PNG’s leading student and professional alumni,” he said.
Mr Basil also challenged the Australia awards scholarships recipients past and present to take innovative and entrepreneurial approach moving into the future.
“I challenge us to share ideas and visions through platforms such as PNGAAA that can contribute to policy discussions through institutions such as NRI and through our universities.
The government is open to ideas that you can feed into the next 10 years of PNG vision 2050 as we retire the first 10 years of the vision.
“PNG, as an independent sovereign nation, is still a very young country.
The challenge for us in this generation now is how we can sustain our resource into the 22 century.
Sustaining should also contain the conservation of our natural resources that’s already imbedded into our cultural practices that we must also sustain,” he said.
