Pruitch to ensure PNG's Foreign Missions fully funded

The Outgoing Papua New Guinea Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Soroi Eoe today handed over the portfolio to his successor Patrick Pruaitch.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Eoe said he's confident Minister Pruaitch will lead the department to greater heights.

He also urged staff at the department to cooperate with the new minister.

Mr Pruaitch thanked Mr Eoe for the leadership during his term as the minister.

Meanwhile,Minister Patrick Pruaitch said his main focus is to ensure the department is strategic about its approach, particularly on Trade with the outside world.

Minister Pruaitch said he wants to use foreign affairs as a leverage to ensure PNG attracts better investors into the country.

"One thing that I want to do in my tenure as minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade is to be strategic about our approach, in discharging our duties while representing our country.

"And I'd be more interested in the trade aspect of it in so far as leveraging foreign investors to participate in our drive to ensure that PNG is moving forward," Pruaitch adds.

Minister Pruaitch told the staff, the starting point for any country to engage with outside world in terms of foreign affairs matters, is the Overseas Mission and the serving diplomats.

With that the new minister assured the Senior Management Team of the department that he will give special emphasise to the foreign missions, ensuring they are fully funded and resource to serve PNG's interests aboard.

Pruaitch further said as former treasure, he understands better the struggles of PNG's Foreign Missions.

Now that he is the Foreign Affairs minister, he said he will make it his business to ensure government properly fund the missions so that diplomats can discharge their duties effectively with ease.

He said he had discussions with the Treasury on this regard, soon after his appointment last week.

There were reports in the pasts of some PNG's Embassies overseas struggling with office rentals, short staff and others.

Also at the Headquarter, foreign service officers appointed to take up postings in overseas mission had to wait, due to unavailability of funds.

These issues will now be the thing of the past as Patrick Pruaich said he is fully aware of theses issues.
