Mass prison break out at PNG's Baisu Leaves 8 dead

Eight (8) inmates are dead after 103 inmates at Papua New Guinea's Baisu Correctional Institution in Western Highlands Province broke out of the prison on Monday.


Western Highlands Provincial Police Commander Jacob Kamiak says so far from the 103, 28 were rearrested, 8 seriously wounded and 8 dead during the escape.

PPC Kamiak says 102 were detainees waiting for court mention and trials while 1 was a convicted prisoner.

PPC Kamiak adds a Police CID Task Force unit that was heading towards Dei Council area to look out for the escapees right after the break out were held up by the Rokogla Tribe where they were disarmed, their ammunition taken and had their guns returned back to them.

A policeman was wounded in the process but is receiving medical treatment at this time.

Meanwhile CS Commissioner Stephen Pokanis says the reason of the escape is unclear at this time however it was reported that the prison guards were overpowered by the prisoners.

The situation at the prison is tense at this time but under heavy guard by the police and CS while the hunt for the escapees continues.
