Bird Questions Marape Govt : Why are we creating Panic, Suppressing people and destroying the Economy?
Outspoken East Sepik Governor Allan Birds has taken on the nerves of the PNG government on its handling of the COVID-19 in the country by questioning the use of State of Emergency -SOE.
In a social media post, he said COVID19 is here to stay in this country and questioned why the government is so hard on the people's lifes and the economy.
"Why are we panicking in PNG? Why are we using SOE to suppress our people and destroy our economy?
COVID19 most likely came into PNG in December last year or early this year.
Which is why we are only detecting it now and we are panicking. We only started testing 4 weeks ago and we are testing those who are persons of interest or with symptoms.
We already know that 80% of people with COVID19 will not show any symptoms. So why the panic now?
The key thing is that no single person in PNG has ended up in hospital with COVID19. It is not causing pneumonia and killing our people like in other countries. Why is this important piece of information not factored into our decision making?
COVID19 will remain in our population forever. It is here to stay. So are we going to keep responding to it with curfews, lock downs and no people movements for the next 5 years?
Let's move forward, maintain social distancing, maintain proper hygiene in all our activities, eat healthy and let's get back to work. Let our people learn to live with this new threat.
We have lived with Malaria and Flu for 10,000 years. We have lived with TB for 100 years and we have lived with HIV and Aids for 25 years.
Learns learn to live with COVID19. Stop the panic"
