PNG Launches Vessels Tracking and Monitoring System

PNG’s Vessels and Tracking Monitoring System was launched on Wednesday, which will give real time information on inbound and outbound vessels in the country.

The system was on trial for some 12 months by the Department of Transport and the National Maritime Safety Authority.

Prime Minister James Marape who launched the system, says this comes in time as the country monitors COVID-19.

There’s been concerns raised on unchecked vessels entering PNG waters and the Prime Minister says this system should put to rest these fears, with checks and balance at the fingertips of front line agencies at the country’s port facilities.

All vessels will be monitored on Automatic Indentification System and Long Range Indentification Tracking.

"This gives comfort to authorities like the Department of Transport and National Maritime Safety Authority to vouch for the Controller and the people of PNG that all vessels are tracked and monitored to ensure that the orders are followed through," said Marape.

The PM used the opportunity to also call on the Department of Transport and NMSA to work on developing PNG’s local maritime surveillance and monitoring.
