PNG PM Marape says he did not bring COVID-19 in to make money

Papua New Guiena Prime Minister James Marape has told government critics not to play politics with the global oronavirus pandemic.
Mr Marape said Covid-19 is here to stay and Papua New Guineans must learn to live in the presence of Covid-19. “The coronavirus was not brought in for Prime Minister James Marape to play politics and make money or do business.
He said Covid-19 is here in the country and as a responsible government imposed a state of emergency and shut down the country. He said the Covid-19 pandemic does not respect whether you are King or Queen, Prime Minister or simple people.
“Coronavirus can get any person and for us being defensive in so far as isolating those who have become possible cases or persons of interest or person under investigation or isolation of those who have turn up positive to ensure we localise the person and ensure we stop corona from spreading has been the number one strategy and we remain and will remain so as our number one strategy as we go into life in PNG living in the presence of coronavirus,” Mr Marape said.
“Medical professionals are with us giving us advise to ensure that what we do what is right and because sick corona will remain for the rest of this year, we are through advise are trying to restore life on a stage by stage to ensure normalcy is restored in the presence of corona in May, June and the balance of this year.”
He said Papua New Guinea health facilities have not improved since independence and his government has inherited all these legacy issues because of failures by past government to address them.
“Our country does not have enough hospital beds, not enough doctors, not enough medicine, it was there ever since. From Independence in 1975 up to now, we have not fix the hospitals, we do not have enough medicines and doctors.
“So when coronavirus came in and if we do not control it properly it will get out of control and affect the country in a very big way.
“That is why, sometimes it will cost our comfort, people want to move around but we say don’t move but stay in one place, we do proper checks and we restrict air travel. It comes at a cost to our own comfort in most instances.”
