PNG Running out of COVID-19 Test Kits
Papua New Guinea will soon be sending its COVID-19 samples to Brisbane Australia for testing as it is running out of test kits.
Deputy Director with the Institute of Medical Research Dr Moses Laman in the daily briefing yesterday says this is a contingency plan for Australia to assist with the testing for a month while PNG awaits its order for more test kits to come into the country.
Dr Laman says at the moment there 201 tests running in country at the PNGIMR, but if required, as early as today they could be sending samples to Australia.
Dr Laman says this situation is brought about because of the shortage of test kits globally because of the high demand on PCR extraction kits, required to do the PCR, which is one of the most highly sensitive test and gold standard that PNG as a country is fortunate to be carrying out this testing.
Acting Health Secretary Dr Paison Dakulala says PNG has placed its order for the test kits, but is joining the queue of other countries who have also ordered.
Dr Dakulala says if tests are sent to Australia, results should arrive back on time given that Brisbane flights are open. FM100/PNGToday
