3 PNG Defence Force Soldiers detained over death of Police Inspector
Three serving members of the Papua New Guinea Defense Force have been identified and detained as of Sunday afternoon by the military police after the death of a senior police officer in NCD on Saturday.
PNGDF Commander Major General Gilbert Toropo revealed this, saying the three will be handed over to the Police Criminal Investigation Division for police to conduct their investigation to criminally charge them.
Major General Toropo says the implicated officers will be dealt with in the military court as well as the criminal court.
Investigations began quite soon after the incident which nearly sparked a standoff between officers from the police and military over the weekend.
Police report states the late Commander of NCD Zone 3 Andrew Tovere was on patrol with his officers in enforcing the ban on liquor sale when they were attacked allegedly by off duty army officers from the PNGDF Air Transport Wing Barracks.
Late Snr Inspector Tovere was hit with a thick piece of tree branch during their confrontation.
Major General Toropo speaking on behalf of the PNGDF offers their sincere condolences to the family of Late Snr Inspector Tovere.
The Police Commissioner and State of Emergency Controller David Manning and PNGDF Commander Major General Gilbert Toropo have both assured the general public in the Nation’s Capital to carry on their normal activities and not to fear any friction between the two disciplinary forces.
The two heads of the disciplinary forces made this call during a joint press conference Sunday afternoon after uncertainty; fear and anxiety were evident in the public’s reaction beginning on Friday night when the senior police officer was attacked by off duty military personnel at 8 Mile settlement.
They both say the same message to exercise restraint is being passed down the rank and file of each institution.
Commissioner Manning and Major General Toropo adds that the unfortunate incident is an isolated case and does not reflect the relationship between the two forces and they will always work side by side as seen in its border operations and joint operations in the highlands region.
