PNC Party Candidate Benjamin Philip wins Menyamya by-election

Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato announced this afternoon that People’s National Congress Party candidate Benjamin Philip has become the eventual winner of the Menyamya Open seat in Parliament in the field of 32 candidates.

“The people of Menyamya have spoken through the ballot paper and their choice of whom to represent them in Parliament must be respected.”

Benjamin Philip’s win came after the 30th and the final exclusion of Country Party candidate Jim Ged and the redistribution of his 7,058 votes.

The final results:

  • Candidate 16 – Benjamin Philip (PNC) – 11,926 votes
  • Candidate 34 – Jacky Yotipi (URP) 11,458 votes
  • The required absolute majority was 11,693. Total exhausted ballot papers were 22,426.

Mr. Gamato said that the Returning Officer Nande Awape officially declared Philip Benjamin as the duly elected member-elect for Menyamya at Menyamya station this afternoon.

And he congratulated the runner and United Resources Party candidate Jacky Yotipi for giving the winner a good challenge right throughout the contest.

“I also acknowledged 30 other candidates and their supporters for ensuring a peaceful and trouble-free election from campaigning to polling, counting and declaration of the winner.

“Necessary arrangements were now being made to have the writ returned to the Governor General at 10:00am on Friday, 8 May 2020 to officially conclude the by-election.”

Mr. Gamato said that with the Menyamya by-election now complete with the declaration of the winning candidate, he will soon advise the Governor General on the revised program for Goroka Open by-election in Eastern Highlands which was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic state of emergency.

“I have issued instructions for allowances for temporary election workers (TEWs) and security personnel engaged in the Menyamya by-election to be processed as well as payments for service providers.”

“I want these payments to be cleared before we (PNGEC) focus on the court-ordered Goroka Open by-election.”

In the meantime, Mr. Gamato thanked and acknowledged everyone involved ensuring the Menyamya by-election was successfully conducted and concluded – temporary election workers (TEWs), security personnel, Morobe Province Election Steering Committee, Lae Electoral Office staff, service providers and people of Menyamya.
