East Sepik Province 1st Cybercrime case
A former public servant from the Maprik District in East Sepik Province, has been arrested and charged under the Cyber Crime Act.
East Sepik Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Albert Beli told NBC News that Ronald Katak of Nelikum Village was arrested by police, after he alleged posted defamatory statements against Agriculture Minister and Maprik MP John Simon on social media Facebook.
PPC Beli said that Mr. Katak was alleged to have posted on various forums that Mr. Simon as the Maprik DDA Chairman, facilitated the awarding of a road and ablution block contract to a named Chinese Company based in Maprik.
He said that there is nothing stopping people from reporting any wrongdoing by those in authority, but they should collect enough evidence and lay a formal complaint with police, and other relevant government authorities to investigate and make arrests.
PPC Beli also said that many people are now abusing Facebook, and they too will be arrested and locked up, if they do not follow the proper process to register their grievances or complaints.
He added that Mr. Katak is currently out on a K5,000 police bail, and he has been warned not to make anymore defamatory posts in regards to these allegations, or find himself being rearrested and having his bail revoked.
Mr. Katak is now awaiting his Court appearance, with a date yet to be set.
