Madang Police Rescue Bougainvillean Students from Karkar

More than 20 students from the autonomous region of Bougainville have abandoned their studies at the Karkar Community College in Madang Province following an incident at the school.

They are now in Madang town waiting to be repatriated to Bougainville.

Police rescued the students last Thursday.

Most of the students are females.

Provincial Police Commander Chief Inspector Mazuc Rubiang says the students were forced to leave after a commotion at the school involving the brother of the school’s principal Mugiar Yass.

Mr Yass was not immediately available to comment on the situation.

Chief Inspector Rubiang told reporters after rescuing the students from the island that he was ordered by Police Commissioner David Manning through the Assistant Police Commissioner for the Northern Command Peter Guinness to immediately attend to the students who were asked to leave the school by the principal early last week.

They were taken care of on the island by the local Four Square Church.

Chief Inspector Rubiang says police have begun investigations into the matter and arrests are expected soon of the perpetrators.

Chief Inspector Rubiang and his policemen brought the students into Madang town and they are now housed at the Dinek Pain Guest House awaiting repatriation.

He thanked the Police Minister and Madang MP Bryan Kramer and Governor Peter Yama for their quick response in helping to move the students out of Karkar.

Chief Inspector Rubiang also thanked the Foursquare Church on the island for accommodating the students after they were removed from the school and the local Seventh Day Adventist church on Karkar for assisting the students with transport.
