PNG Police Chief Manning orders investigation into claims of harassment of Women in raid
PNG Police Commissioner David Manning says a full investigation is being conducted into allegations that members of the NCD Fox Unit physically and sexually harassed women vendors during a raid at Porebada Junction on the 18th of April.
Manning said this this come after Central governor Robert Agarobe, raised complaint to Police Minister Brian Kramer in Parliament last week.
Governor Agarobe said the incident happened during the state of emergency lockdown where women were harassed by police officers from the Unit.
Agarobe claims police officers went to the extreme of searching the women’s private parts for money.
Commissioner Manning says they have received the complaint document and are investigating those officers involved and if need be, criminal charges would be pressed against them.
Manning says in this way, the constabulary is not tarnished but bring positive changes into the unit and make it more responsive to ensure there is efficient policing in the city.
Meanwhile, Commissioner Manning says he is keen to work with the NCD Metropolitan Command to ensure the refresher training for police officers in NCD continues.
The Commissioner added that the NCD Fox Unit is an important component to the constabulary and in order to avoid all the criticism and complaints from the public, the training will be used as an avenue to minimize the use of excessive force on members of the public.
These efforts are key to make the police force in PNG a stronger institution and maintain a peaceful society and ensure access to justice for all. Statement/FM100/PNGToday
