PNG COVID-19 death toll rises to 3
One more Papua New Guinean died from COVID-19 within the last 24 hours bringing the total number of COVID-19 deaths to three.
The recent death was a 62 year old male adult who had an underlying medical condition. He presented himself to the Port Moresby General Hospital for shortness of breath and pneumonia symptoms at 7pm last night. He was tested positive for COVID-19 and died around 12.30 am today (6 August).
Of those 10 new cases, one was in the Southern Highlands, four from Tabubil in the Western Province and the rest in the National Capital District. The Southern Highlands case was an adult male who was visited by his daughter last week. The daughter is a nursing officer at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
The four patients in the Western Province are contacts of a positive case that was announced yesterday (5 August).
Of the five NCD cases, one was tested positive at the Pacific International Hospital after being sick.
There are currently 34 inpatients at Rita Flynn courts, two are moderate and rest are mild. In addition there are five patients all in moderate condition at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
Mr Manning said, “To date we have tested 10,808 persons for COVID-19. Of this 10,351 results have come back with 163 confirmed cases. The balance of 350 tests is pending laboratory results.
“The number of active COVID-19 cases is 109. The total discharges to date is 53.
"COVID-19 has now affected seven out of the 22 PNG provinces. We will not know its full extent until we ramp up the tests and samplings around and throughout the country.
“Again I wish to appeal to the people of PNG to take heed of our health messages. COVID-19 is here. It is real. It has so far infected close to 17 million people in more than 215 countries and claimed the lives of more than 600,000 people worldwide.
“So please cover your face with a face mask. Wash your hands regularly. Practise safe distancing of 1.5 meters. Cough into your elbow and please stay home if you can. The virus is spread from people to people so take heed of our messages and stop the spread.”
