PNG PM Marape Proposes No Compensation for Gender-Base Violence
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape is proposing Parliament make compensation a criminal offence in an effort to step up actions against gender-based violence.
James Marape also proposed setting up a police pathway to dealing with GBV as well as setting up a bipartisan parliamentary committee on GBV.
Speaking during question time in Parliament this morning, Mr. Marape said the committee will work with the National Research Institute to relook at the laws and systems in place and recommend if these need to be further tightened.
He said disputes including GBV are being resolved through compensation with perpetrators being set free and victims not seeing justice done. What the Prime Minister is proposing will be part of the terms of reference for the bipartisan parliamentary committee.
Marape said all these must be removed so GBV is fully addressed and eliminated in PNG.
He was responding to questions by NCD Governor Powes Parkop on what steps the Government will take to address GBV, which he described as the real pandemic facing PNG.
