PNG Controller Manning urges People to get Tested for COVID-19

The Controller of the National Pandemic Response, Mr David Manning, has urged more citizens to come forward for COVID-19 testing.

“It is only through laboratory tests that we can confirm the presence of the virus and those infected can get the proper medical care. Knowing your COVID-19 status can prevent you from spreading the virus to your family and friends, ” Mr Manning said.

The Controller also called on health facilities throughout the country to do more swabbing according to the testing strategy and to send the samples to laboratories for testing.

Mr Manning expressed concern that there are evidences of community transmission and that more tests have to be carried out among the communities to determine the extent of the outbreak in the country.

Meanwhile, no COVID-19 case was reported in the country for the third day in a row. The country’s confirmed cases remain at 516, with six deaths.

"The fact that there was no case reported in the last three days does not mean we lose momentum on the efforts that we put. We must remain vigilant and adhere to prevention measures," Mr Manning said.

To date, 13 provinces in the country have confirmed cases: NCD (301); Western Province (189); Central (7); Morobe (5); East Sepik (3); East New Britain (2); West New Britain (2); Milne Bay (2); and one case each from Southern Highlands, Eastern Highlands, West Sepik, New Ireland and Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

Globally, the total confirmed cases are now 29,444,198 and the death toll stands at 931,321. There was an increase of 252,680 confirmed cases in the last 24 hours.

In the Western Pacific region, a total of 10 countries/territories had confirmed cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total confirmed cases for the region to 565,290 cases and 12,386 deaths.
