PNG High Court to hand down Decision on Marape's Election as Prime Minister

The Papua New Guinea  Supreme Court's decision on whether Prime Minister James Marape's appointment as Prime Minister is constitutional or not will be decided before the end of this week.

The country's Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika adjourned the matter for ruling after a five-man bench heard submissions from all the parties this afternoon.

The application by Opposition Leader Belden Namah through his lawyer Greg Sheppard from Young and William lawyers on James Marape's appointment as Prime Minister was on the basis that there was a breach of the constitution when former Prime Minister Peter O’Neill accepted and then declined his nomination during the Vote of No Confidence in May last year.

The Supreme Court earlier today accepted the application after finding that Mr Namah has standing and the matter itself raises important constitutional matters.
