PNG Politics : Additional Police Personnel arrive in Port Moresby to Provide Security during Political Uncertainty

Additional police officers are being transported into the Port Moresby to provide security during this political uncertainty, as fears grow of opportunists taking advantage of the situation.

PNG Police Commissioner David Manning said the extra forces are being brought from the provinces to look after key government installations, including the precincts of the National Parliament and the National and Supreme Courts.

He said in a statement that this is to deter opportunists from throwing the country into chaos.

Mr. Manning said he's held discussions with Parliament Speaker Job Pomat and Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika through the Registrar of the National and Supreme Court about the heightened security around these premises.

He said the Speaker and Chief Justice have supported the efforts of the police force in remaining neutral.

The Police Commissioner said under his watch, the Constabulary will ensure these two separate and distinct arms of government remain free from any undue influence.

Divisional Commander for NCD and Central, Assistant Commissioner Anthony Wagambie Junior, and Assistant Commissioner Operations Samson Kua will be coordinating security operations over the coming weeks to ensure minimal disruption to government services, business, and public transportation.

Mr. Manning appealed to the public to stand with the police during this time and let justice and the rule of law prevail.

Meantime, Police Commissioner, David Manning has issued a directive to all policemen and women throughout the country not to take sides in the current political situation.

This directive was issued at the weekend, with Commissioner Manning warning he will discipline members who continue to play politics.

In a statement, Mr. Manning said policemen and women must remain neutral and allow the courts to interpret what has happened, and allow for the political leadership to decide.
