India gives 132,000 COVID-19 Doses to Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea received its first shipment of 132,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines from the COVAX Facility in India this morning.
The vaccines arrived on an Air Niugini flight from Singapore early this morning.
The World Health Organisation PNG said on its Facebook page, these vaccines will be offered first to health workers followed by other frontline workers at high risk of COVID-19 infection, to protect them from severe illness and death from the disease.
W.H.O says the official ceremony will take place later this week between government, COVAX partners and donor countries.
COVAX, short for COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access, is a global initiative aimed at ensuring there is fair access to COVID-19 vaccines led by UNICEF, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the World Health Organization, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, and others.
COVAX coordinates international resources to enable low-to-middle-income countries equitable access to COVID-19 tests, therapies, and vaccines.
It is funded by rich Western countries.
