PNG to have World-Class Cancer Facility

Cancer patients in Papua New Guinea will seek treatment in a world-class facility that is currently under construction at the Port Moresby General Hospital.

The  K58.3 million project is at its early stages of construction and it’s expected to be completed with the availability of funds.

Whilst providing an update on the project, Chief Executive Officer of Port Moresby General Hospital, Dr Paki Molumi said cancer patients will have access to the latest facilities, including the Linear Accelerator once the project is completed.

The machine is able to target and destroy cancerous cell in a precise area of the patient’s body.

Dr Paki Molumi said the Linear Accelerator is different from a commonly used cobalt machine.

The Project has already completed its first pace last year with three more paces to go.

The first pace of the project has seen the completion of the two cancer bunkers or the heart of the facility as described by Dr Molumi.

The K58.3 million project is the Public Investment Project funded by the National Planning Department.

About K8 million to K9million has been used in its first pace with funding yet to be released for other project paces.

Dr Molumi says, due to funding constraints, the project has been on hold since the completion of its first pace.
