Morobe Provincial Election Manager Simon Soheke told FM100 News the incident took place at about 2pm by a mob of angry candidates with their supporters and scrutineers.
"There were some disagreements prior to the incident and election officials had tried to resolve these out with them, however they decided to turn to violence," Mr Soheke said.
"That no leaves us with no choice but to return back to Lae since there is nothing left to continue the election process."
Mr Soheke however did not specify what the disagreements were but added that he will now do a report of this incident to the Electoral Commissioner to make a decision.
"Whatever call the Electoral Commissioner makes will be the ultimate decision, whether or not it be a failed election for Markham."
Morobe Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Jacob Singura also confirmed the incident, adding the Zone Commander on the ground is yet to formally brief him on the details.
