PNG Governor General Saddened at Passing of Sir Tipo Vuatha

H.E. Grand Chief Sir Bob Bofeng Dadae, Governor General of Papua New Guinea, has expressed sadness at the passing of former Official Secretary Sir Tipo Vuatha.

Sir Tipo succumbed to illness and passed away last week.

Sir Tipo was the longest serving Official Secretary at the Governor General’s Office and served three Governor Generals, Sir Silas Atopare, Grand Chief Sir Paulias Matane and Grand Chief Sir Michael Ogio from 1997 to 2016.

He commenced employment at the Governor General’s Office as an Accountant in the early 1990s and made his way up to the position of the Official Secretary in charge of administration of Government House.

In 2007, Sir Tipo was awarded Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order, LVO, the only recipient of this award in the country.

In 2016, shortly before retiring at the age of 65, Sir Tipo received the award of Knight Bachelor in recognition for his service to the Governor General’s Office as Official Secretary and as a long serving public servant.

During his tenure as Official Secretary, Sir Tipo provided advice and oversight to the Governor Generals he served on matters of State, Protocol, Diplomacy and ceremonial duties and functions of the Head of State.

“I was saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Tipo. Sir Tipo was a very experienced Senior Public Servant having served the Governor General’s Office for more than 20 years before retiring in 2016. His distinguished career at Government House is well known and which has earned him a Knight Bachelor award and the rare honour of the Royal Victorian Order award by the Royal Family. On behalf of Lady Emeline and staff of Government House, I convey my deepest sympathies and condolences to Lady Vuatha, children and grandchildren on the passing of the late Sir Tipo Vuatha. As we mourn the passing of this distinguished man, we take to heart the legacy he has left behind not only for his family and loved ones, but also here at Government House and our nation. May god’s grace guide and comfort you all during this difficult time,” Grand Chief Sir Bob said.
