Immigration Agencies in Pacific Islands States must work together, says PNG Deputy PM Rosso
Immigration Agencies in all Pacific Island States must work together and learn from each other’s experience to improve their respective border management systems, said PNG Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Labour and Immigration Honourable John Rosso, MP.
Minister Rosso made this statement today when officially opening the “Border Management Systems in the Pacific” workshop at the APEC House in Port Moresby. The two day workshop is facilitated by the PNG Immigration and Citizenship Authority (ICA) and is attended by Heads of Immigration Agencies and their technical staff from over 13 Pacific Island States.

“We are privileged to host such a distinguished gathering of key stakeholders, delegates and members of the Pacific Immigration Development Community (PIDC),” said Mr Rosso. “This workshop is a significant step in reaffirming Papua New Guinea’s commitments to the region through our active engagement in various forums including the PIDC.”
“It is a statement to our shared vision of promoting cooperation and collaboration among Pacific nations for the greater benefit of our region and its people,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
The workshop aims to discuss and promote good practices when it comes to procuring Border Management Systems. It provides a platform for Pacific Island Nations to openly share their experiences, challenges and find meaningful and practical information on the systems each country is using and how they can learn from each other to improve.
Minister Rosso said border management is crucial for facilitating genuine business, tourism, enhancing traveler movement and detection and deterring rogue elements that may pose a threat to the National Security of our island nations.
“Through this workshop, we hope to impart a comprehensive understanding of the essential project management steps and considerations that each country should undertake before inviting tenders from border management system providers.
“Evaluate vendor bids and considering costs are important aspects but of greatest significance is the need for any potential BMS system to be fit for purpose for the nation itself and for the wider region,” Minister Rosso said.
Immigration Agencies in the Pacific are using different border management systems. Through this workshop, PNG ICA is sharing its experiences and lessons learnt with all Pacific Nations to assist them to explore and identify best-practices when it comes to procuring border management systems.
Minister Ross is encouraging Heads of Immigration Agencies in the Pacific to work together and improve border systems to better facilitate trade and investment in the region and same time address national security issues.
Chief Migration Officer Mr Stanis Hulahau said PNG Immigration has made significant improvements to its Border Management System (BMS) and is willing to share its experiences and provide technical advice to Pacific nations in an effort to improve their systems.
