PNG ICT Minister Masiu Announces 'Open Innovation Platform' as Part of Digital Transformation Agenda
Papua New Guinea Minister for Information and Communications Technology Timothy Masiu on his keynote address during the Innovation PNG 2023 Workshop announced the initiation of an “Open Innovation Platform” for businesses to collaborate with government.
The Open Innovation Platform will be hosted on the Government Cloud which is set to launch on January 2nd, 2024.
“DICT is in the final stages of establishing a Government Cloud Account for the whole of government,” Minister Masiu stated.
Minister Masiu added that the Government Cloud based innovation platform is specifically designed for local budding start-ups, allowing them to harness cloud capabilities, to propose, develop and test innovative solutions tailored for the country’s needs.
The Government through the Ministry and Department of Information and Communications Technology aims to create an ecosystem where innovative minds can collaborate and thrive, leveraging technology to drive our development agenda forward.
“It's a call to action for our brightest minds to partner with the government, using cutting-edge technology to shape our nation's future,” Minister Masiu stated.
The Government Cloud centralizes our digital resources, ensuring efficiency, security, and scalability for all government-related digital activities. And it further provides cloud-based innovation to solve not just public service machinery challenges but also driving business innovation solutions for the private sector.
Minister stated that the Ministry of ICT and DICT has put in place the appropriate policies and legislative framework to drive digital transformation and innovation.
The Digital Transformation Policy 2020 has set the vision for which the Digital Government Act (DGA) of 2022 establishes the legal framework for delivery and provision for a wide range of critical digital government services including the Government Cloud, the Secure Data Exchange Platform, Public Internet Payment Gateway, Digital ID verification, and a suite of eGovernment Portals.
The DGA has outline the provisions for the establishment of an Innovation Hub, and the Digital Government Plan 2023 – 2027 and more broadly the Medium-Term Development Plan 2023 – 2027 anchors an investment plan to support the delivery phase.
“To our innovators, entrepreneurs, and partners in development, our message is unequivocal: The government is not just an observer or beneficiary in this era of innovation. We are collaborators, facilitators, and most importantly, believers in what we can achieve together."
