Jarome Luai Confirms Move to Wests Tigers for 2025 Season

Putting an end to months of intense speculation about his future, Jarome Luai has officially declared his transition to the Wests Tigers for the 2025 NRL season and beyond.

The announcement came during a press conference held at Darling Harbour, where the Penrith Panthers star disclosed his departure after the Panthers reportedly waived the customary 10-day cooling-off period.

In an emotional moment, Luai described his decision to leave the Panthers as "probably the toughest decision of my career and probably life so far." He acknowledged the unwanted attention surrounding the ongoing speculations, stating the purpose of his announcement was to provide clarity and respect for his current team and teammates in the upcoming 2024 season.

"For 2025, I'll be heading to the Wests Tigers to continue my career," Luai confirmed, citing the opportunity to provide for his family and his personal growth as driving factors behind his move. He expressed enthusiasm about the prospect, emphasizing his strong connection with Benji Marshall and their discussions about the future.

Amidst his absence from Panthers training, Luai had informed teammates that the 2024 season would mark his departure. His deal with the Tigers is estimated at $6 million across five years.

Under the revised contracting regulations in the CBA, a 10-day cooling-off period is granted once a player receives an offer from another club. This provision allows the player's former team the opportunity to negotiate or counteroffer and provides the player a chance to reconsider.

The Panthers, offering a three-year deal worth $2.5 million, opted to waive their right to this cooling-off period after it commenced on December 16.

The impending move is seen as a significant boost for the Tigers, aiming to revitalize the club under new leadership following the dismissal of the entire board and CEO Justin Pascoe after consecutive wooden spoons.

While the Bulldogs were also in contention for Luai's signature, reports suggest their offer fell short by about $750,000 compared to the Tigers' proposal.

The saga surrounding Luai's future has been met with both anticipation and skepticism, with rugby league legend Steve Roach previously expressing doubts about the move. Despite concerns raised by figures like Roach, Luai's decision to join the Tigers marks a pivotal moment in his career trajectory.
