PNG Parliament Votes Overwhelmingly in Support of Prime Minister Marape's Leadership
In a resounding display of support, Members of Parliament (MPs) have reinforced their confidence in Prime Minister Hon. James Marape through a unanimous vote in Parliament. The motion, introduced by the Leader of Government Business, Hon. Rainbo Paita, was a response to a no-confidence challenge from the Opposition.
During the parliamentary session, 84 members voted in favor of Prime Minister Marape, while members of the Opposition chose to walk out of the chamber. Prime Minister Marape, emphasizing that parliamentary procedures were duly followed, expressed gratitude to the MPs who stood by him.

He specifically acknowledged the diverse party representation among the supporters, highlighting the broad base of support across the political spectrum. The 84 supporting MPs included 56 from his ruling Pangu Pati, 11 from United Resources Party, six from the Social Democratic Party, four from People’s Party, two from the Liberal Party, and one each from National Alliance, People’s Movement for Change, and Melanesian Liberal Party.
In a display of unwavering resolve, Prime Minister Marape declared, “No one is going to run away from a vote-of-no-confidence under James Marape,” underscoring the Opposition's right to challenge his leadership if they have sufficient backing.
Expressing gratitude to Acting Speaker Hon. Koni Iguan for maintaining order and decorum in Parliament, Prime Minister Marape emphasized the importance of the parliamentary process, encouraging open debate and dissent within established procedures.
However, he raised concern over the Opposition's decision to walk out, characterizing it as a departure from parliamentary principles. Prime Minister Marape called for a more constructive engagement within established procedures, stating, “Leadership and decisions in Parliament are determined by the rule of numbers.”
He called on all Members of Parliament to engage constructively, respect democratic processes, and uphold the importance of standing orders and mechanisms available for expressing dissent and challenging government motions. Affirming his commitment to leading Papua New Guinea with integrity and dedication, Prime Minister Marape invited all MPs to participate in the democratic process with maturity and respect for the rules governing the nation’s legislative body.
