PNG Defence Minister Assures Support for Communities Hit by Earthquake in East Sepik Province

 Papua New Guinea's Defence Minister, Dr. Billy Joseph, has pledged assistance to communities affected by a massive earthquake in parts of the East Sepik province. The earthquake, with its epicenter in the Yangoru-Saussia and Ambunti areas, has prompted urgent response efforts.

"We are receiving reports of an earthquake, centered in the ESP province. As the National Coordinating Agency for natural disasters, we await reports from provincial disaster centers to coordinate our response," Minister Joseph stated. He urged all emergency services to stay vigilant due to adverse weather conditions, advising against sea travel in small boats to ensure safety.

Minister Joseph emphasized the crucial role of Provincial Administrators and District Administrators in managing disaster response. Expressing solidarity with affected communities, he assured ongoing support and updates on relief efforts.

The National Disaster Centre has reached out to the Provincial Disaster Coordinator for East Sepik, Mr. Derrick Watwik, who confirmed the earthquake's impact in Wewak without major damage. However, communities near the epicenter may have experienced significant destruction.

The earthquake, measured at magnitude 6.9 with a depth of 64 kilometers, poses no tsunami threat. Minister Joseph has communicated with East Sepik Governor, Allan Bird, to coordinate response efforts and mobilize defense assets for assistance.

Acknowledging frontline responders and volunteers, Minister Joseph praised their dedication and urged continued unity in facing these challenges. He assured affected communities of ongoing support and pledged transparency in relief efforts.
