PNG-Australia Policing Partnership Enhances RPNGC Capabilities
Port Moresby, June 18, 2024 - During a visit to the Bomana Police College Training facilities, PNG Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko highlighted the significant contributions of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) through the PNG-Australia Policing Partnership Program.
The program includes training in less-than-lethal use of force and the provision of appropriate munitions and equipment to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC). This initiative, part of the Bilateral Security Agreement, addresses a critical capability gap for the RPNGC, ensuring the use of proportional force during incidents such as civil disorder or encounters with armed offenders.

"The program has been delivered in Port Moresby and Lae Sector Patrols and will be extended to Mt Hagen and Kokopo in the near future," Tkatchenko stated.
Furthermore, the initiative includes the construction of police housing across Port Moresby, Kokopo, and Mount Hagen as the first phase, facilitating the placement of RPNGC recruits in regional centers upon graduation.
Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus, speaking at the commissioning of the PPV Minigulai earlier in the day, emphasized the strong ties between PNG and Australia. "Our links, our friendship, and our steadfast work together are embodied in the Bilateral Security Agreement signed by our Prime Ministers last year," Dreyfus remarked. "This agreement represents an enhanced enduring partnership that equips us to tackle new and emerging security challenges."
The statements by Tkatchenko and Dreyfus underscore the importance of the PNG-Australia Policing Partnership Program in strengthening the capabilities of the RPNGC and enhancing regional security cooperation.
