Air Niugini Announces Fare Restructure to Combat Increased Costs

Air Niugini has announced an adjustment to its domestic airfares effective Monday, July 15. The airline aims to restructure its fare system to provide better value for travelers while maintaining the consistent delivery of safe airline services.

Over the past year, Air Niugini has faced a significant increase in fuel costs and a rise in the cost of airline supply chains both within Papua New Guinea and globally. The airline has not been immune to these cost increases, which include higher prices for aircraft leases, spare parts, and services sourced from overseas, driven by global supply chain inflation and the appreciating value of foreign currencies against the Kina.

Air Niugini acknowledges that airlines worldwide are grappling with increased costs, leading to fare hikes. However, the airline is pleased to report that fuel supply issues have been resolved, reducing flight delays and cancellations previously caused by fuel shortages in Port Moresby.

Despite these cost pressures, Air Niugini is committed to offering increased value to its customers. Approximately 25% of seats sold will either see a reduction in price or remain unchanged. The airline emphasizes its responsibility to provide affordable and accessible air travel. However, passengers traveling on mid-range and full-fare economy tickets will experience fare increases between 15% and 25%, with business class fares also set to rise.

Air Niugini will continue to offer saver fares and promotional deals, with a new airfare sale announcement expected later this week. The airline remains dedicated to its fleet replacement program, which includes the arrival of more modern and efficient aircraft to replace the retiring Fokker fleet. This initiative began with the addition of two Boeing 737-800 aircraft and an upcoming Dash8-Q400 in August. Furthermore, the new Airbus A220 aircraft will start arriving in August 2025, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinea's independence.

Air Niugini extends its gratitude to all valued customers and stakeholders for their continued support.
