Papua New Guinea Business Icon James Seeto Passes Away
Papua New Guinea's business community is mourning the loss of James Seeto, a prominent businessman and the Governing Director of the Seeto Kui Group of Companies, who passed away peacefully on September 6, 2024. Seeto's passing marks the end of an era, as he leaves behind a remarkable legacy in the country's business landscape.
The Seeto family’s journey in Papua New Guinea began in 1938 when they arrived in Salamaua, Morobe, from China. Seeto Kui, James Seeto's father, was one of the early Chinese immigrants who worked in various trades, having traveled from Canton at the age of 13. Despite the devastation of World War II, the family returned to Lae in 1948, where Seeto Kui started a trade store with only 100 Australian Pounds, laying the foundation for what would later become a multi-million Kina enterprise.
Under the leadership of the late James Seeto, the Seeto Kui Group grew into a thriving business employing thousands of Papua New Guineans across sectors such as grocery, hardware, and construction. His leadership and vision played a pivotal role in transforming the business into a significant contributor to the local economy, providing job opportunities for many.
Deputy Prime Minister of PNG and Member for Lae, John Rosso, expressed his condolences to the Seeto family, recognizing James Seeto's immense contributions to the community. "Late James was more than just a prominent figure; he was a true pillar of our society whose contributions to business, employment, and the development of PNG will be remembered for generations to come," Rosso stated.
Rosso further highlighted the late Seeto's role in shaping Lae into a thriving city through his business leadership, tireless efforts, and generous spirit, which left an indelible mark on the community and the country.
This loss comes just weeks after the passing of another prominent businessman, Sir Soekandar Tjandra, the founder of the Papindo Group of Companies. Prime Minister James Marape also expressed his sadness, noting the significant impact both leaders had on Papua New Guinea’s business sector.
