This vow comes after Prime Minister James Marape secured a resounding victory in the vote of no confidence (VoNC), winning 75-32 in a parliamentary session held yesterday.
The victory followed a heated exchange in Parliament, with Madang MP Bryan Kramer calling for a debate on the VoNC after it was introduced. The motion was carried at 10:45 am, after which Parliament was adjourned to November 26.
In his 49th Independence anniversary message, Marape outlined plans to focus on youth education and skills development, as well as expanding the economy beyond traditional sectors like mining, oil, and gas. He highlighted the importance of diversifying into agriculture, tourism, fisheries, and technology.
Marape also called for unity, stressing the need for the nation to work together while respecting its cultural diversity. He urged citizens to put the nation's interests above personal gain for collective progress.
Reflecting on 49 years of independence, Marape celebrated the nation's growth from modest beginnings to becoming a proud and resilient country. He credited Papua New Guinea's rich linguistic and cultural diversity as its greatest asset.
