Calls for Resignation! PNG Deputy Opposition Leader Blasts Prime Minister Marape Over Security Crisis

Deputy Leader of the Opposition, James Nomane, has urged Prime Minister James Marape and his Cabinet to step down, citing their inability to address the growing wave of violence across Papua New Guinea.

Nomane criticized the government, stating, "I urge the Prime Minister and his ministers to resign for leading the country toward becoming a failed state. The economy is crumbling, and crime is spiraling out of control. Parliamentarians must not tolerate this surge in violent crime that endangers our citizens. After five years, Marape has failed to address law and order, and it is time all MPs hold him accountable."

Nomane further condemned the Prime Minister’s leadership since taking office in 2019, labeling it as incompetent and disconnected from the priorities of Papua New Guineans. He warned that the ongoing law-and-order crisis would only deteriorate under Marape’s leadership.

Speaking as the Member for Chuave, Nomane raised these concerns in light of escalating violence and killings nationwide.

"We are witnessing an alarming rise in violent crime, with illegal weapons being used across the country. The recent incidents in Enga, East New Britain, and the National Capital District are symptoms of a broader leadership crisis. This violence has created fear among our people, eroding public trust and damaging the government’s credibility. Parliament must unite and demand the Prime Minister’s resignation for his failure to protect our citizens," Nomane said.

He emphasized that safeguarding citizens is the most fundamental responsibility of any government, and Papua New Guinea cannot accept the normalization of violent crimes such as beheadings and mass killings.

"The Marape government is obligated to implement policies that ensure the safety of our citizens. A secure environment is crucial for the country’s development and progress," Nomane concluded.
