New Level 3 Hospital to Transform Healthcare in Port Moresby Moresby North West
A modern Level 3 hospital is set to revolutionize healthcare services for over 60,000 residents of Hanuabada Village and thousands more from neighboring communities in Moresby North West and Central Province. The Australian Government-supported Metoreia Urban Health Centre, officially opened this week, will deliver essential healthcare to these underserved areas.
With 32 staff members, the facility is equipped to provide Level 3 and Level 4 health services starting next week. It will cater to the Motu Koitabu villages and the wider Moresby North West electorate, offering maternal and childcare services, an outpatient ward, a tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS centre, eye care, and oral health care.
Prime Minister James Marape, during the opening ceremony, acknowledged the Australian Government for its support and praised the initiative as a step towards uplifting the Hanuabada community. “This location holds historical significance as the starting point of Australian administration in Papua New Guinea. Today, we are giving back to the landowners with a facility they truly deserve,” he stated.
Health Minister Elias Kapavore emphasized the importance of the new centre in alleviating patient congestion at Port Moresby General Hospital, particularly in maternity wards. “This facility is expected to safely deliver approximately 1,000 babies annually, ensuring mothers and children have better access to life-saving healthcare,” he said.
Australian High Commissioner John Feakes reflected on Australia’s decades-long commitment to supporting the Motu Koitabu community. “This health centre continues a legacy that began with the Maternal Health Clinic in the 1950s. It’s a proud moment to inaugurate this new facility with a strong focus on maternal and child health,” he remarked.
The Metoreia Urban Health Centre stands as a beacon of progress, promising better healthcare outcomes for families across the region.
