ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies Join Forces to Accelerate PNG's Papua LNG Development

ExxonMobil’s Chief Executive Officer Darren Woods has assured Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape that the company is working closely with TotalEnergies and other partners to ensure timely decisions and progress on the Papua LNG project.

Woods made this commitment during discussions in Davos, Switzerland, where he confirmed that ExxonMobil would continue collaborating with TotalEnergies and other stakeholders to expedite the development of the Papua LNG project. Marape confirmed that Woods would meet with TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné to align efforts for the successful delivery of the project.

Prime Minister Marape emphasized that the government is focused on synchronizing the Papua LNG and P’nyang LNG projects to maximize benefits for the country. He noted that when combined, the gas resources from both fields would amount to 11 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas, representing a substantial opportunity for Papua New Guinea.

"The Government is committed to supporting ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies, and their joint venture partners to sequence these projects effectively,” Marape said, highlighting the importance of these developments for the nation's future.

The discussions in Davos also centered on expediting the final investment decisions (FID), construction, and first gas production for the Papua LNG project, with plans to transition resources to advance the P’nyang LNG project afterward. Marape stated, "We aim to ensure that once Papua LNG is operational, efforts will be made to develop the P’nyang LNG."

He added that both projects, along with the PNG LNG operations, would secure Papua New Guinea’s position as a leading gas-producing nation.

Marape also emphasized the significance of the commitment shown by Woods and Pouyanné in advancing both the Papua LNG and P’nyang LNG projects. He said, “Their shared focus on these projects gives us confidence in achieving our vision of sustainable resource development that benefits all Papua New Guineans.”
