Australia Supports PNG Athletes in International Competitions
Australia and Papua New Guinea share a strong connection through sports, and the Australian Government continues to support high-performance sports in PNG. Through the PacificAus Sports partnership with Netball Australia and PNG Netball, the PNG Pepes will travel to Brisbane this month to compete in the PacificAus Sports Netball Series. The competition will feature teams from Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, the Australian First Nations Black Swans, and, for the first time, Scotland.

Similarly, Australia’s PacificAus Sports initiative, in collaboration with AFL and PNG AFL Development, is backing young AFL talents and officials from PNG. These athletes will participate in the AFL U16 Pacific Academy Camp in Queensland, with sessions scheduled both this month and in March. The support aims to develop emerging athletes and provide them with international exposure.
The Australian High Commission recently hosted the PNG Pepes and young AFL players before their departure for these major sporting events in Australia. The gathering provided an opportunity to celebrate their participation and encourage the athletes as they represent PNG on the international stage.
Australia remains committed to fostering sports development in Papua New Guinea, recognizing its role in strengthening ties between both nations. The upcoming competitions will provide invaluable experience for PNG athletes, further enhancing their skills and competitiveness in the region.
