Papua New Guinea PM Marape Warns of Potential Facebook and TikTok Ban Over Cyber Attacks
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has warned that the government may be compelled to completely ban Facebook and TikTok if online attacks persist.
Marape denounced the recent social media abuse directed at Miss Papua New Guinea, May Torovi Hasola, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and urging citizens to use digital platforms responsibly. He instructed the Police and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to swiftly identify and apprehend those responsible for the offensive comments.
The Prime Minister assured the public that security agencies had been tasked with tracking down the perpetrators, arresting them, and ensuring they face legal consequences. He indicated that he expects a comprehensive report on the matter by the following Monday.

Additionally, Marape extended a formal apology to Miss Hasola, her family, and the people of Bougainville for the distress caused by the defamatory remarks. He expressed his disappointment as a father and national leader, condemning the inappropriate attacks on the young woman.
Marape commended Hasola for representing the nation admirably at the Miss Pacific Pageant and reiterated his regret over the incident on behalf of Papua New Guinea. He emphasized that such behavior on social media is unacceptable.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister confirmed that a directive had been issued to relevant agencies to conduct a joint investigation. He called for stronger collaboration between the ICT department and law enforcement to combat the growing issue of online harassment, particularly targeting young women.
Marape also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve social media oversight in Papua New Guinea, stating that the ICT department is advancing plans to register users to enhance regulatory measures.
