Before departing for Australia, Prime Minister Marape addressed the media, confirming his scheduled visit to Canberra. He stated that he would engage with the National Library and Archives to collect essential records that trace the nation's path to independence. These documents, he noted, are crucial for compiling materials for the upcoming 50th-anniversary celebrations.
Marape emphasized the significance of these archives, stating that the Australian institutions hold key records that detail PNG’s transition to independence. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to access these materials and intends to personally review them on Monday afternoon.
Additionally, the Prime Minister revealed plans to engage with the Gough Whitlam Foundation later that evening. He highlighted the foundation’s role in commemorating PNG’s independence, given that former Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam played a pivotal role in the country’s transition to self-governance in 1975.
Marape noted that the foundation is organizing a special event aimed at the younger generation of Papua New Guineans. The program will reflect on the crucial steps that led to PNG’s independence, further contributing to discussions surrounding the nation's 50th anniversary.
