PNG Marape Warns Politicians Against Interfering in Court Matters

Wests Tigers centre Justin Olam has retired from professional rugby league with immediate effect. The decision comes after a knee injury sustained during Round 18 of the 2024 season left the 31-year-old unable to continue playing following extensive medical consultations.

Olam’s retirement marks the end of an illustrious career defined by resilience, skill, and unwavering determination. A proud representative of Papua New Guinea, he leaves behind a legacy as one of the most respected players in the NRL, having played 117 games over his career while earning acclaim for his fearless defensive efforts and dynamic attacking prowess.

Having joined the Wests Tigers ahead of the 2024 season, Olam featured in 13 matches this year before his untimely injury. Prior to his move, he spent six seasons with the Melbourne Storm, amassing 104 appearances and securing the coveted 2020 NRL Premiership. In 2021, he was awarded the Dally M Centre of the Year, cementing his status as one of the premier centres in the competition.

Looking back on his journey, Olam expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunities he received throughout his career. "I started out hoping to play just one NRL game, but God blessed me with more than I ever imagined," he said. "My faith and determination carried me through, and if my story can inspire young players in Papua New Guinea to chase their dreams, then I’ve done something meaningful." Despite his physical limitations preventing him from continuing, Olam remains steadfast in his belief: "With God, anything is possible."

Tributes have poured in from across the rugby league community, with Wests Tigers head coach Benji Marshall leading the charge. "Justin is not only one of the greatest players to represent Papua New Guinea but also a true warrior on the field," Marshall said. "It’s been an honour to work with him, and we wish him and his family all the best moving forward."

Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson echoed these sentiments, describing Olam as "an icon of international rugby league" and "the king of PNG rugby league." Richardson added, "His impact extends far beyond the field, inspiring countless young athletes in his homeland and leaving an indelible mark on our sport."

To celebrate Olam’s remarkable contributions, the Wests Tigers will host a special tribute at Campbelltown Sports Stadium this Sunday. Additionally, a joint recognition ceremony with the Melbourne Storm will take place during their Round 10 clash at AAMI Park on May 11. These events aim to honor Olam’s enduring legacy and pay homage to a player whose passion and dedication elevated both clubs and the wider rugby league community.
