Pais Wisil Breaks 30-Year-Old PNG 100m Record
Sprinter Pais Wisil has etched his name into Papua New Guinea’s athletics history by breaking a national record that had stood for three decades.
Wisil clocked an impressive 10.24 seconds in the 100m, surpassing the previous record of 10.40 seconds set by Peter Pulu in 1995 in Stuttgart, Germany. This achievement marks a major milestone in PNG athletics, with Wisil slicing 0.16 seconds off the long-standing record.

Athletics PNG hailed the record-breaking run as a significant accomplishment, especially with the World Indoor Championships fast approaching next weekend.
Former record-holder Peter Pulu congratulated Wisil on his achievement and encouraged him to aim even higher.
“Well done, Pais! I always knew this moment would come, and you’ve made it happen,” Pulu said. “You can still improve that time—keep pushing forward.”
Athletics PNG also acknowledged Wisil’s coach, Tony Fairweather, for his role in guiding the athlete to success.
Meanwhile, former PNG sprinters joined in celebrating Wisil’s accomplishment on social media.
Takale Tuna shared his excitement, saying, “Congratulations, Pais.”
Geoffrey Bai praised Wisil’s dedication, writing, “Fantastic time! Well done and congratulations, Pais. Your humility and hard work have truly paid off.”
